🏟️ The Universal Index
The best team in the world right now, across sports: every MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL team, Europe’s leading football clubs and every IPL franchise, on one scale, back to 1946.
Refreshed 1 Nov
Who stands highest today, refreshed every morning.
Pick any week since 1946 and see who stood highest.
The daily board
Every team, ranked by how far it stands above its own league's field. Pick a sport to see one league, or North America for the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL together.
How this is measured
Universal = 1500 + 100 × z, where z is how exceptional the week is within the team’s own sport. Each league is scored against itself. The pool mean is the league’s members that week (club football: the pool clubs in season or idle under 120 days), and the yardstick is the pooled spread of in-season pool Elos over the trailing five seasons, so one hot week does not move the scale. Because the tails differ by sport (baseball’s best stand far from a tight field, the NBA’s field is wide at the bottom), each league’s z is then calibrated through its own history so that a 1-in-1000 week scores the same in every sport. A team out of season keeps its number and decays toward the field at a rate that lands exactly on the engine’s own carry-over by opening day; nothing is ever dropped from the board.
The arrows beside a position show places gained or lost, and the ± column the change in the Universal score, in whole points: since yesterday on the daily board, since the previous Tuesday on any week in the all-time board. Green is up, red is down, “new” marks a team entering the pool.
Club football: the standing at every season’s end is the site’s club season hub, by ruling. While a past season is being played, the clubs are ranked by their Elo that week, so a club rising through the season rises on the index; the settled hub takes over the week after the club’s last match. The live 2026-27 ranking, snapshotted daily, is the standing once the season starts.
The daily board, by league
The same board, five deep per league: overall position on the left, Universal rating on the right.
Next up: who is No.1
The chance each leading side holds No.1 when the board is rebuilt next Tuesday.
How this is measured
The No.1 odds replay every game before the next Tuesday ten thousand times through each engine’s update rule, then rebuild the board, decay for idle teams included. Club football’s standing comes from the season ranking, which results move only through the table, so a club’s chance there is an estimate.

The all-time board: any week since 1946
The same board for any Tuesday since January 1946. Slide to a week.
How this is measured
Teams are keyed by franchise and shown under the name they carried that week, so 1995 has the Cleveland Indians and 2007 the Seattle SuperSonics. Club football shows the pool (big-five top-flight clubs, the season’s European Cup or Champions League entrants, and the clubs that reached the last 16 of Europe’s other cups; before 1959, the clubs set out under “Before 1959” in the method), and once a club has made the pool, it stays on the board in later seasons while it plays in its top division. The 1 June 2021 board is a useful check: Manchester City, Bayern and Chelsea in the hub’s order, the Avalanche and Dodgers between them.
The cities that own the board
Weeks a metro had a team in the top 10, 1946 to 27 Oct 2026.
How this is measured
Every Tuesday since 1946 counts once for a metro when at least one of its teams is in the overall top 10, however many it has there. A team counts for the metro it played in that week, so the 1950s Lakers count for Minneapolis and the Nordiques for Quebec City. The Bay Area and the Washington-Baltimore region are one metro each, as on the rest of the site. Club football has more teams in the pool than any American league, so European football cities lead; sort by weeks at #1 or open a metro for the detail.
All-time peaks
Each team's best week ever, or within a decade or a year.
How this is measured
One row per team, its highest Universal on any Tuesday in the period chosen, no floor and no minimum tenure. A decade or a year shows every team’s best week within it, not only the teams whose all-time peak fell there. With every league calibrated to its own history, the 2007 Patriots, the 1998 Yankees, the 2017 Warriors and the 2023 Bruins sit within ten points of each other, and the best club season (Milan 1994-95) reads on the same scale. A peak reached out of season is possible only in the first two weeks of grace before decay starts.
Who gets in, and why
A league is on this board only if it passes two tests: the sport’s best players play there, and the sport has an international game that matters. The board is for elite sport, not for every top division.
In: The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL; the big-five European top flights and that season's European Cup or Champions League clubs; any club that reached the last 16 or further of the UEFA Cup or Europa League, the Cup Winners' Cup, the Fairs Cup or the Conference League that season, in every era; the IPL. That club pool is the yardstick. Once a club has made the pool, it stays on the board in later seasons while it plays in its top division, measured against the pool without changing it. Before 1959, when there is no season hub, it is the big-five top flights (West Germany through the clubs that reached the national final round), the Latin Cup, Mitropa Cup and European cup clubs, and any top-flight club elsewhere in Europe whose estimated season (national-team strength plus league standing) reaches the season's bar, the median of the big-five and West German pool clubs; clubs outside the big five and West Germany in 1946-54 are marked est.
- AFL and NRL. The best players of each code play here, but no other country plays the code at a serious level.
- NPB, KHL and EuroLeague. Strong leagues, but their best players leave for leagues that are already on the board.
- Clubs outside Europe. Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, MLS and the other continents are held, not ruled out. A world club rating is planned to test them against the European pool, and that test will decide.
Where these numbers come from
TestedThe board does not depend on the order leagues load, one entrant moves no one else and club Elo is zero-sum; no backtest is published. About the tiers
The scale
For every league and every Tuesday, z = (Elo − pool mean) / pooled sigma. The mean is the league’s pool that week; the sigma is pooled over in-season pool weeks in the trailing five seasons (floor 15), which keeps a 1960s NHL of six clubs and a 32-team NFL on one axis. Weeks with fewer than eight pool weeks behind them, or under half the pool in season, carry the previous week’s yardstick. That sigma-scale z is then mapped through the league’s own history of in-season weeks to a normal quantile (equal tails: a 1-in-1000 week is +3.1 in every sport), and Universal = 1500 + 100z.
Off-season decay, the only treatment
A team’s number holds for a grace period after its last game (14 days; 21 in the NFL), then decays exponentially toward the field so that on opening day it equals the engine’s own carry-over (a third of the way back to the mean in MLB and the NFL, a quarter in the NBA, 30 percent in the NHL, 20 percent in club football). Every team is shown every week; nothing is floored at a peak.
Club football
The pool is the big-five top flights plus that season’s European Cup or Champions League proper, first-division clubs only, plus every club that reached the last 16 or further of the UEFA Cup or Europa League, the Cup Winners’ Cup, the Fairs Cup or the Conference League that season, in every era (since 15 October 2026). A cup run puts a club in the pool for that whole season; in the season being played it joins once it has played a last-16 tie. The order among clubs is the site’s club season hub (the club power ranking); the index maps each club’s hub score to its quantile among all pool club-seasons of the trailing five seasons. A club switches to a finished season’s standing the week after its own last rated match. While a past season is being played, no weekly hub exists, so the standing is the club’s Elo rank among the pool that week, on the same quantile scale, from its first match of the season; nothing from the previous season is carried into it. The live 2026-27 ranking, snapshotted daily from the hub’s live table, is the standing of record once the season is under way. A club with no hub standing yet (its first season in the top flight, or the first half of 1959, before the first hub season) takes its Elo rank among the pool that week on the same quantile scale. Names are the club’s current name. The pool sets the yardstick; the board shows a little more. Once a club has made the pool, it stays on the board in later seasons while it plays in its top division, so Ajax no longer drops out in a year it went out of Europe early. Those seasons are scored against the pool but never join it, so no other team’s score changes, only places below them. A club is never shown before its first pool season, or in a season spent in a lower division. Top divisions come from the league tables in the club season hub.
Before 1959
The club season hub starts in 1959-60, so for 1945-46 to 1958-59 each club’s season is an estimate built from two things: how strong its country’s national team was (its Elo over the previous three years) and where the club finished in its league, with a little weight on its previous three seasons. Corrections from the matches clubs of different countries played against each other (the Latin Cup, the Mitropa Cup, the European Cup, and friendlies at a lower weight) adjust each country’s level, and a correction measured against the 1960s hub only ever lowers a club, never raises it. The pool is the big-five top flights (the English clubs from 1946-47, when the Football League resumed; West Germany’s regional Oberligen through the clubs that reached the national final round), the Latin Cup, Mitropa Cup and European cup clubs, and every top-flight club elsewhere in Europe whose estimate reaches the season’s bar: the median estimate of the big-five and West German pool clubs. During a season the clubs move week by week on real results. For the leagues that played no competitive matches abroad (West Germany, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and the rest), a club’s place in its own league that week sets its score, so the league keeps its estimated level. Where no results are staged, a club shows its final standing all season. Clubs from outside the big five and West Germany in 1945-46 to 1953-54 carry an est. mark: their numbers are the least certain on the board.
Sources and what is still missing
MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL from this site’s Elo spines (the MLB spine is the replay chain). Club football from the unified club Elo (Davidson engine) and the club season hub, both on this site. The IPL (from 2008) comes from this site’s IPL Elo, rated against the franchises that played that season; a short season, so its yardstick pools the trailing five seasons and the equal-tails calibration is its own history. National sides have their own board on the Nations tab; the college pools are a later phase. The 2026-27 club Elo is re-rated weekly over the season’s results; the hub order, which sets the standing, is live. Trophy icons mark the holders of the four American major-league titles (and the AFL’s, while it ran), the three UEFA cups and the retired Cup Winners’ Cup, the big five domestic titles and the FA Cup, from this site’s champions table, changing hands the snapshot after the win; the icons are Wikimedia Commons works, credited in credits.json. Rebuilt every morning; the Tuesday build is the one the history keeps, so the time machine and the peaks are weekly; see Against Expectation for the match model underneath the spines.

Questions
What is the Universal Index?
The best team in the world right now, across sports: every MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL team, Europe's leading football clubs and every IPL franchise on one scale, back to 1946.
How is the Universal score calculated?
Universal = 1500 + 100 × z, where z is how far a team stands above or below its own league's field that week. Each league is scored against itself, and each league's z is calibrated through its own history so that a 1-in-1000 week scores the same in every sport.
What happens to a team out of season?
Its number holds for a grace period after its last game (14 days; 21 in the NFL), then decays toward the field so that on opening day it equals the rating engine's own carry-over. Every team is shown every week; nothing is dropped from the board.
How are football clubs ranked?
The standing at every season's end is the site's club season hub. While a past season is being played, clubs are ranked by their Elo that week, and the live season's ranking, snapshotted daily from the hub, is the standing once the season is under way.
How often is the index updated?
It is rebuilt every morning. The Tuesday build is the one the history keeps, so the all-time board and the peaks are weekly.
