Furthest from the sun
Where the legal clock runs furthest ahead of, or behind, the sun.
Data as of
The sun against the clock
Each dot is a metro, coloured by how far its clock sits from the sun.
How deviation is measured
The sun implies an offset of four minutes per degree of longitude. Deviation is the legal standard offset minus that figure, so a positive number means the clock runs ahead of the sun. Standard time is the January offset, or the smaller of January and July in the southern hemisphere.
Clocks ahead of the sun
Metros where noon on the clock comes long before the sun is highest.
How to read solar noon
Solar noon is the clock time when the sun is highest: 12:00 plus the deviation. It ignores the equation of time and summer clocks.
Clocks behind the sun
Metros where the sun is highest before the clock reaches noon.
Countries by clock deviation
Each country's mean deviation, weighted by Metro Power, with its lowest and highest metro.
How the mean is weighted
A country's mean weights each metro by its Metro Power, so large cities decide it. The column sorts by size, ignoring sign.
