A match margin is drawn around 0.0504 points per Elo point of difference, give or take 16.76 points, both fitted on 1,390 tests since 2003; Australia gets home advantage in every match. Because the tournament is a year away, every rating is first moved by a random amount the size of a top side's typical Elo change over that time (47 points over 356 days, measured). Pool points count a losing bonus within 7 and stand in for the try bonus with a win by 20 or more.
Scored on every World Cup match since 2003 (285): Brier 0.126 against 0.25 for a coin flip, the higher-rated side winning 230. Whole tournaments, re-run from the same distance out: 2015, New Zealand given 66% (favourite New Zealand, 66%); 2019, South Africa given 4% (favourite New Zealand, 65%); 2023, South Africa given 12% (favourite France, 23%).

Every men's international since 1871 ranked by a computed Game Score blending closeness, stakes and team strength.
How this is measured
Team strength is a continuous Elo rating spanning the whole history. Closeness is judged against the match's own scoring, so a twelve-point margin in a seventy-four-point semi-final is not treated as a blowout, and total points earns a bonus so that open games are not buried under one-score kicking duels. A shock result earns its own bonus, measured against what the ratings expected before kick-off, so a win nobody saw coming is no longer penalised for the weakness of the side that pulled it off. What the score still cannot see is tries, lead changes and ball-in-play time: none of those are in the results data. A star marks a curated row: either an all-time classic lifted onto the board, or one of three World Cup finals placed at a fixed rank by hand. TestedEvery test-match update is zero-sum under property tests; the ranking itself has no published backtest. About the tiers
Test rugby from the first international in 1871: 3,191 matches, every season of the Home, Five and Six Nations and of the Tri Nations and Rugby Championship, all the Rugby World Cup finals, and our own Elo world ranking of 79 sides, tier two and three included. A page for every test nation on file.
Results and season tables are compiled and hand-curated in the project workbook: every championship test from the 1883 Home Nations onward, Rugby World Cup pools and knockouts, tour matches and autumn/summer internationals, with standings, Grand Slams, Triple Crowns and titles derived from the match ledger. Scheduled fixtures without a result are excluded from all records.
World rankings are our own Elo, the rating behind the Universal Index nations board. It rates every Test in the workbook plus tier-two and tier-three tournaments (Rugby Europe, the Africa Cup, the Asia Rugby Championship, the South American Championship, Rugby Americas North, the Pacific Nations Cup and the RWC qualifiers) from Wikipedia; a side first seen in those games starts at 1100 rather than 1500, so a small closed pool cannot inflate it. It replaced the World Rugby rankings on 4 October 2026. Western Samoa results are carried under Samoa.
