Team strength is a continuous Elo rating spanning the whole history. Closeness is judged against the match's own scoring, so a twelve-point margin in a seventy-four-point semi-final is not treated as a blowout, and total points earns a bonus so that open games are not buried under one-score kicking duels. A shock result earns its own bonus, measured against what the ratings expected before kick-off, so a win nobody saw coming is no longer penalised for the weakness of the side that pulled it off. What the score still cannot see is tries, lead changes and ball-in-play time: none of those are in the results data. A star marks a curated row: either an all-time classic lifted onto the board, or one of three World Cup finals placed at a fixed rank by hand.
