z is the move in units of that series' typical step; beyond 2 either way is rare.

How this is measured

A price move is the change in the log of the price; a rating move is the change in Elo points. Each is divided by the root mean square of that series’ own steps over a trailing window, scaled up when the move spans more than one step (two games, or a market closed for a day).

Windows: the last 250 daily log returns for indices, commodities and crypto; the last 250 weekday log returns for currencies; the team’s last 100+ games, whole weeks for NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB Elo; the club’s last 100 weekly re-rates in which the club moved for club football. A series with fewer than 60 observations is left out and counted below.

Only series that change daily are here, so polls are not. Club football is re-rated once a week, and its moves appear on the day the re-rate lands. A pegged currency is left out: a rounding wobble against a near-zero spread is not news.
