About this series

Closing levels, one point per trading day. Yahoo Finance chart API. Index levels are price returns in local currency, so they exclude dividends and are not adjusted for exchange rates: a chart of the Nikkei against the S&P compares two different things in two different currencies. They are quoted nominally by default, with a Real toggle that deflates by United Kingdom CPI (World Bank FP.CPI.TOTL, US series extended to 1913 from the BLS via FRED) and expresses the whole history in 2025 money. Inflation data is annual, so the deflator is interpolated between mid-year points, and the real view begins in 1960, where that CPI record starts. None of this is investment advice; all of it is geography with a time axis.
