About this series

Closing levels, one point per trading day. Coin Metrics community network data (to 2014-09-16) + Yahoo Finance chart API. Bitcoin has no exchange, no country and no home metro, so unlike every other series here it is not tied to a place. It also trades every day of the year, which is why it has no weekend gaps. Yahoo carries BTC-USD only from 2014-09-17, so the first four years — the 8.6-cent quote of 2010-07-18, the 2011 Mt Gox spike and crash, the 2013 run — come from Coin Metrics' community reference rate, free for non-commercial use with credit. Across 4,267 overlapping days the two diverge by a median of 0.16% (ninth decile 0.82%), so the single seam at 2014-09-17 is smaller than an ordinary hour of bitcoin. This is the only series on the site with no country, no exchange and no home metro behind it, and the only one that trades every day of the year rather than on an exchange calendar. They are quoted nominally by default, with a Real toggle that deflates by US CPI, because this is priced in US dollars (World Bank FP.CPI.TOTL, US series extended to 1913 from the BLS via FRED) and expresses the whole history in 2026 money. Inflation data is annual, so the deflator is interpolated between mid-year points, and the real view begins in 1913, where that CPI record starts. None of this is investment advice; all of it is geography with a time axis.
