Before MLS: the NASL, 1968-1984

Every title and franchise of the North American Soccer League, each a defunct club in its own right.

Why wins and losses, not points

The NASL gave 6 points a win (3 a tie until 1974) plus a bonus point a goal, up to three a game; from 1975 every tie went to a shootout. The standings are shown as wins, ties and losses, not compared with MLS points.

  1. 1968 · 17 clubstwo conferences, then a two-leg final
  2. 1969 · 5 clubsone table (five clubs); the leader was the champion
  3. 1970 to 1974 · 6 to 15 clubsdivisions, then play-offs and a final
  4. 1975 to 1983 · 12 to 24 clubsdivisions and conferences, play-offs, then the Soccer Bowl
  5. 1984 · 9 clubstwo divisions, play-offs, then a best-of-three Soccer Bowl Series
