1997 Vietnamese National Assembly Election

20 July 1997 · Đổi Mới opens a narrow door · 450 seats, 226 for a majority

Communist Party of Vietnam finished first with 384 of 450 seats. Turnout 99.6%. Phan Văn Khải replaced Võ Văn Kiệt.

Every candidate, party member or not, still had to be nominated through the Communist-led Fatherland Front, and non-party and independent candidates never took more than a few dozen of several hundred seats.
