2002 Vietnamese National Assembly Election

19 May 2002 · Đổi Mới opens a narrow door · 498 seats, 250 for a majority

Communist Party of Vietnam finished first with 447 of 498 seats. Turnout 98.8%. Phan Văn Khải stayed in office.

Every candidate, party member or not, still had to be nominated through the Communist-led Fatherland Front, and non-party and independent candidates never took more than a few dozen of several hundred seats.
