2019 European Parliament Election

23–26 May 2019 · The polycrisis parliaments · 751 seats, 376 for a majority · 28 member states

Turnout rose for the first time in the Parliament's history, above 50%, in a contest framed as pro- versus anti-European. The EPP–S&D grand coalition lost its combined majority for the first time since 1979, liberals and greens surged, and Britain elected MEPs it would withdraw within a year. The Spitzenkandidat system collapsed: the European Council bypassed every lead candidate to nominate Ursula von der Leyen.
