2014 European Parliament Election

The Spitzenkandidat election

22–25 May 2014 · The polycrisis parliaments · 751 seats, 376 for a majority · 28 member states

The first election fought under the Spitzenkandidat system, in which the lead candidate of the winning family claims the Commission presidency: the EPP's Jean-Claude Juncker duly got the job over David Cameron's objections. Eurosceptic insurgents topped the poll outright in Britain (UKIP), France (Front National) and Denmark, the first time anti-EU parties had won national first places at a European election. Group seat totals are those at the Parliament's constitutive session.
