1996 Palestinian Legislative Election

20 January 1996 · The Palestinian Authority · 88 seats, 45 for a majority

Alongside the presidential vote, Palestinians elected the first Legislative Council on 20 January 1996. With Hamas and the other Islamist and leftist factions boycotting, Fatah took 50 of the 88 seats and nominally independent candidates — many of them Fatah-aligned — most of the rest.

Held with Hamas and several other factions boycotting; competitive within those limits, and judged broadly credible by international observers.
