2000 Peruvian Presidential Election

9 April 2000 · The 1993 constitution and a fraud-marred re-election · two-round vote

Alberto Fujimori won in the runoff with 74.33% against Alejandro Toledo on 25.67%. Turnout 82.8%.

Fujimori's third-term bid rested on a legally questionable reading of the term-limit clause; the campaign involved a forged-signature ring, army pressure on protesters and stolen pre-filled ballots, the opposition boycotted the runoff, and an OAS mediation helped force his resignation seven months later.
