2000 Peruvian Congressional Election

9 April 2000 · A single chamber, 1995 to 2021 · 120 seats, 61 for a majority

Peru 2000 finished first with 52 of 120 seats. Turnout 82.8%. Alberto Fujimori stayed in office.

Fujimori's third-term bid rested on a legally questionable reading of the term-limit clause; the campaign involved a forged-signature ring, army pressure on protesters and stolen pre-filled ballots, the opposition boycotted the runoff, and an OAS mediation helped force his resignation seven months later.
