Mwai Kibaki won with 46.42% against Raila Odinga on 44.07%.
The result was announced by a divided electoral commission whose own chairman later said he did not know who had won, foreign observers raised concerns about the count, and the dispute was resolved by a power-sharing deal rather than by settling it.
