The green wave

Spain and Portugal's first full European election, held as the Berlin Wall entered its final months. The Socialists won a third straight victory, and the green wave arrived: 30 MEPs formed the first Green group after breakthroughs in Britain (15% of the vote and no seats, courtesy of first-past-the-post), France and Germany.
