Valuations + Ownership

What sports teams are worth, with sources, and who controls each one.

Data as of

770 teams valued · 675 control owners · sources named on every row

What it is for

The question this dataset answers, and the pages built from it.

To see what a team, a league and an owner's portfolio are worth on one board, and who holds control of each club. The figures carry their source, so a reader can tell a published valuation from a sale price or our own estimate.

Each team carries the highest valuation we hold for it, in US dollars, with its source and year. Where a football club has changed division since its published figure, or no figure exists, the board shows our own estimate, marked CoN. Each franchise has exactly one control owner.

Data dictionary

Every field the public pages show: its key in the data, what it means, its unit and how often it is filled.

How filled is counted

Filled is the share of rows that carry a value for the field. For counts and money a second line gives the share that is not zero, because a zero there means none recorded rather than a missing value. A share never rounds up to 100% unless every row is filled.

Method

The short version; the full method lives on the pages linked below.

ReviewedPublished valuations and owners are copied from named sources and checked by hand; our own estimates are labelled as ours. About the tiers

  • Where we hold more than one valuation for a team, the board shows the highest and archives the rest; an old figure is marked as old.
  • Our estimates are labelled CoN: a club that changed division is valued from projected revenue or its parachute year, a team with no published figure from comparables, each with a range.
  • Football Benchmark is enterprise value (equity plus net debt); the other houses publish franchise values.
  • Ownership records one control entity per franchise; co-controllers and minority holders are shown but never summed, so a portfolio cannot double count a club.

Changelog

Board rebuilds from the valuations change log, and release notes that mention valuations or owners.

  1. Board rebuilt: 1 revalued, 36 added.
  2. Team Valuations now covers Ligue 2, the 2. Bundesliga and Premiership Rugby on the League Explorer, each club valued from published budgets, accounts or deals and labelled with how.
  3. Several deals are corrected from fresh sources, including Chelsea's 2026 stake sale in pounds and Benfica's lapsed sale, which no longer counts as a valuation.
  4. A new League Ownership Rules page sets out, league by league, whether private-equity funds may invest, how much they may own, and the limits on passive and multi-team stakes, each cell sourced and dated.
  5. A new Sports Deals page lists 101 sourced team transactions with stake, price, implied full value, buyer type and deal structure, linked from Owners and Valuations.
  6. Board rebuilt: 6 added.
  7. Board rebuilt: 7 revalued, 10 added.
  8. Board rebuilt: 23 revalued, 30 added.
  9. Board rebuilt: 12 revalued, 60 added.

Rights and reuse

The valuation figures are compiled from lists published by others (Forbes, Sportico, Football Benchmark and more). They are shown here as pages and the source lists are not redistributed, so there is no valuations download. The owner registry is our own and is already served as a file.
